5 Simple Ways to Zero Waste Pet Care

Since your pet plays a significant role in your life, you want to incorporate them in your zero-waste way of living. Fortunately, there are several easy things you can do to help reduce your pet's carbon footprint.

When it comes to reducing waste as a pet parent, it's easy to become overwhelmed by all of the options. Begin with a few simple alterations that fit your schedule. Pets, like people, have particular requirements. You may not be able to eliminate all trash, but every little bit helps!

Here are five ways you can start becoming a pro at zero-waste pet care, whether you have a dog, cat, or another animal.

5 Simple Ways to Zero Waste Pet Care

1. Make Pet Food from Scratch

Remember that one last piece of burger from the night before? Or that half-plate of rice or pasta you made the night before? Simply add some vegetables, cover with broth, and bring to a boil. Dogs will go crazy about this, and it allows you to consume leftovers without feeling guilty.

Cats may be pickier, but if you try to grow them by feeding them actual food, they will accept it.

Some omnivorous animals can gradually adjust to a more environmentally friendly vegetarian or vegan diet, but they must maintain their meals tuned to what constitutes a healthy diet for them.

If you can't manufacture food from scratch for your dogs, why not purchase it in bulk or in recyclable cans?

2. DIY Toys for Your Pet

Every pet need toys, which can be readily made from old plush animals (make sure there are no harmful ingestible components), bits of wood, yarn, cleaned femur bones or antlers...

Parrots enjoy wooden toys that require them to think, and for hamsters, you might create various toys (bridges, wheels, staircases) with the assistance of a carpenter.

If you can't buy zero-waste toys, buy things to last!

3. For long-haired pets, use an eco-friendly comb.

Whether a cat, a dog, a hamster, or a rabbit,... Brush their hair using a bamboo brush or a 100% metallic (recyclable) brush.

If you have an old brush that you no longer use, it will sufficient. The hair is then compostable.

4. Do not clean your pets with anything besides water.

PS: they don't need!

Pets, particularly cats, have a self-cleaning mechanism, and bathing them frequently can result in skin problems, irritation, redness, and hair loss.

If your dog enjoys rolling in the dirt, bathe it with hot water and a little amount of extremely diluted soap. Cats despise bathing, so this should be no trouble.

5. Enjoy Nature With Your Pet

Spending time with your pet is one of the most enjoyable aspects of being a pet parent. Getting outside together allows you to decompress while also creating great memories.

Take your dog on walks, treks, or outings to a nearby river or lake. Their tails will wag as they take in new sights and smells.

Cats may also learn to walk on a harness and enjoy sunbathing, chewing on grass, and spying on passing birds.

As a lifetime animal lover, I've witnessed how important pets are in people's lives. They keep us busy and make us happy and sometimes make us shake our heads in exasperation.

Reducing waste in your pet's life does not have to mean sacrificing enjoyment. I hope these suggestions have sparked your interest in zero-waste pet care.

Yay! We’re better together!
